Welcome!

Heinrich Ahrens, born March 19, 1819 in East Friesland, near Hannover, Germany.  He moved to Hubble's Corner, east of Sunman,  in Ripley County, outside of Batesville, Indiana in 1833.  He came with a brother, Herman, and 2 sisters.  Martha married a Sitterding.  The other sister, Anna married a Pohler, we think.  Heinrich's wife, Anna Maria Mollenkamp, from Hannover, came over with a brother.  She was born April 18, 1818.  They were married August 15, 1843 at Adams Lutheran Church, several miles SE of Batesville.  (See "Ahrends Early Spellings" for more detailed early history.)

This website is dedicated to the promotion of the Ahrens Reunion to be held at Adams Lutheran Church in 2007, which will be 70 years after the first one held in 1937.

"I would say the photo of the church was done in the 60's..the old red school building is on the right.  That building was used in the winter for dinners, confirmation classes, brotherhood, ladies aid etc...it may also have been where they taught the German school.  The big white building that is no longer in the picture across the road was used only in the summer because it did not have stoves to heat it with.
For the strawberry social, in the big white outdoor building...the men would churn with huge ice cream churners and the taste was fantastic.  It had a stage and they would put on skits etc. for entertainment.

The bedford stone Sunday School rooms that are attached to the church were built in the late 50's.  It has a cafeteria in the downstairs and that is now where we have our get togethers." (Jen Awad)

On this Home Page, we will introduce the main forces behind the Reunion and what we hope to accomplish.

Contributor of photos and Schutte/Bernhard information is Jenny (Bernhard) Awad, from Anna's line.

We are from 4 of the 8 families that had children.

The reunion was held on June 30 and July 1, 2007.  In Batesville, we  stayed at the Hampton Inn.  Saturday afternoon activities was at Adams Lutheran Church, with time to view and exchange family photos, read the family history and suggest additions and corrections, and tour the cemetaries.

In the evening at 6:30, we had a dinner together at the Sherman House in Batesville, with a video presentation of the family.

Sunday morning at 10,  we attended church at Adams Lutheran, and there was a lunch served afterward.  Great food, fun family, and wonderful ice cream!

As we collect more details of the weekend, and perhaps add photos from family albums, this site will be updated.
